Nephrology and urology
Also known as: Einteilung der Hyponatriämie (europäische Leitlinie 2014) · Hiponatremi sınıflaması (Avrupa kılavuzu 2014) · Classification of hyponatraemia (European guideline 2014)
What it is for
Hyponatraemia is a serum sodium concentration <135 mmol/l (ion-selective electrode). The guideline classifies it by biochemical degree, by time of development and by symptoms; the axes are used together.
Classification
| Category | Description |
|---|---|
| Mild | serum sodium 130–135 mmol/l. |
| Moderate | serum sodium 125–129 mmol/l. |
| Profound | serum sodium <125 mmol/l. |
| Acute | documented to have developed within less than 48 hours. |
| Chronic | documented to have existed for at least 48 hours; if it cannot be classified, it is taken as chronic unless there is clinical or anamnestic evidence to the contrary. |
| Moderately symptomatic | any biochemical degree with moderately severe symptoms: nausea without vomiting, confusion, headache. |
| Severely symptomatic | any biochemical degree with severe symptoms: vomiting, cardiorespiratory distress, abnormal and deep somnolence, seizures, coma (Glasgow Coma Scale ≤8). |
