NINDS myotatic reflex scale

Neurology

Also known as: deep tendon reflex grading · Reflexgraduierung (NINDS) · Muskeleigenreflexe Graduierung · Derin tendon refleksi derecelendirmesi · Deep tendon reflex grading (NINDS myotatic reflex scale 0-4)

What it is for

NINDS myotatic reflex scale: grades the amplitude of a deep tendon (muscle stretch) reflex from 0 to 4.

Classification

CategoryDescription
0reflex absent.
1reflex small, less than normal; includes a trace response or one obtained only with reinforcement.
2reflex in the lower half of the normal range.
3reflex in the upper half of the normal range.
4reflex enhanced, more than normal; includes clonus if present (which can be noted in words).
Notationa plus sign is often written after the number (e.g. 2+); in the NINDS scale it does not change the meaning. Side-to-side asymmetry and the patient's previous grades matter when judging what is normal.
