Boxed warning
Cardiovascular Thrombotic Events
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) cause an increased risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, including myocardial infarction and stroke, which can be fatal. This risk may occur early in treatment and may increase with duration of use [see Warnings and Precautions (5.1) ].
- Flurbiprofen tablets are contraindicated in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery [see Contraindications (4) and Warnings and Precautions (5.1) ].
Gastrointestinal Bleeding, Ulceration, and Perforation
- NSAIDs cause an increased risk of serious gastrointestinal (GI) adverse events including bleeding, ulceration, and perforation of the stomach or intestines, which can be fatal. These events can occur at any time during use and without warning symptoms. Elderly patients and patients with a prior history of peptic ulcer disease and/or GI bleeding are at greater risk for serious GI events [see Warnings and Precautions (5.2) ].

What it is used for
- Relief of the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis
- Relief of the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis
Dosing
- 200 to 300 mg per day, divided into two, three or four doses
- Largest recommended single dose 100 mg
- Lowest effective dosage for the shortest duration; adjust dose and frequency to the response
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity (e.g. anaphylaxis, serious skin reactions) to flurbiprofen or any component
- History of asthma, urticaria or allergic-type reactions after aspirin or other NSAIDs
- In the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
Important warnings
- Boxed warning: increased risk of serious, possibly fatal cardiovascular thrombotic events (myocardial infarction, stroke), which may occur early in treatment
- Boxed warning: gastrointestinal bleeding, ulceration and perforation, possibly without warning symptoms; greater risk in the elderly and with prior ulcer or bleeding
- Hepatotoxicity, hypertension, heart failure and edema
- Renal toxicity and hyperkalemia; anaphylactic and serious skin reactions; hematologic toxicity
Side effects
- Incidence 1% or greater: edema, GI bleeding, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, elevated liver enzymes
- Headache, nervousness, insomnia, tremor, somnolence, rhinitis, rash, changes in vision, dizziness, tinnitus
Interactions
- Anticoagulants such as warfarin, SSRIs/SNRIs: increased bleeding risk
- ACE inhibitors, ARBs and beta-blockers: diminished antihypertensive effect
- Lithium: increased lithium levels; methotrexate: increased risk of toxicity
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Limit dose and duration between about 20 and 30 weeks (risk of fetal renal dysfunction and oligohydramnios); avoid from about 30 weeks (premature closure of the ductus arteriosus)
- Poorly excreted into human milk
