Disclosure: this article is published by Medelix — we make a medical AI tool ourselves. Every statement about other providers rests on the linked sources, as of 13 October 2026. Products change quickly; the providers' current information is authoritative. How we write comparisons is described in our editorial policy.

What happened?

OpenEvidence is an AI-powered search engine for clinical questions, made by the US company OpenEvidence Inc. In late April 2026 several outlets reported that the service shows users in the European Union and the United Kingdom a notice that OpenEvidence is not available there. According to these reports, the notice cites mounting regulatory uncertainty regarding the treatment of AI systems in the EU and the UK [1][2][3]. The first report appeared on 28 April 2026 [2].

We did not find a press release from OpenEvidence about the withdrawal. We therefore only report what the cited sources document — not how the company assesses the legal situation in detail.

What OpenEvidence does well

To be fair, OpenEvidence has real strengths that many clinicians valued:

  • Content partnerships with major journals. In 2025 OpenEvidence signed a multi-year content agreement with NEJM Group [4] and an agreement with the JAMA Network whose content informs its answers [5].
  • Free for verified US professionals. According to its App Store listing, OpenEvidence is free for verified US clinicians; verification uses the US NPI number [6].

For clinicians in Europe the service is currently not an option, whatever its strengths.

Which alternatives exist in Europe?

The tools below can be used in Europe according to their providers. The list is not exhaustive and not a ranking.

What Medelix offers

We describe Medelix only with what our own public documents state:

  • Every claim cited. Answers link each statement to its source with [n] citations; when the literature does not support a confident answer, Medelix says so instead of guessing.
  • Sources: guidelines, official medicines registers and peer-reviewed literature, retrieved live for the question — among others via Europe PMC, OpenAlex, CORE, Semantic Scholar and Unpaywall, plus the guideline registers of the issuing bodies [7].
  • Run in the EU. Medelix runs on its own servers in Helsinki, Finland [7].
  • No patient data needed — the terms prohibit entering patient-identifying data, and input filters additionally redact common direct identifiers [7].
  • Free for individual users; any paid tier will be announced at least 30 days in advance [9].
  • Ask in your own language — English, German and Turkish are tested end to end.
  • Clinical calculators with their primary source, e.g. CURB-65 or CHA₂DS₂-VA.

How to choose

  • You want a comprehensive reference with question banks and study plans: that is what AMBOSS is built around.
  • You want to ask a specific clinical question and get an answer with sources from guidelines and studies, processed in the EU: that is what Medelix is for. Ask a question.

Whichever tool you use: AI answers do not replace your own check. Read the cited source before acting clinically.
