Medelix vs AMBOSS: reference library or AI research tool?

In short

AMBOSS and Medelix do different jobs. AMBOSS is an editorially written medical knowledge platform with question banks, study plans and apps. Medelix is an AI tool that answers a specific clinical question with evidence from guidelines and literature retrieved at the moment you ask. Many students and clinicians will find a use for both.

AMBOSS at a glance

• Company: AMBOSS SE, registered in Berlin [1], founded in 2012 by a group of young residents [2]; offices in Berlin, Cologne and New York [3].
• Content: produced by a team that, by its own account, includes more than 250 physicians, scientists and software developers [3]. There are editions for, among others, Germany, the US and an international English version [4].
• Exam preparation: a US question bank with more than 13,900 USMLE, COMLEX and board questions [5]; in Germany a study plan for the written M2 exam with original IMPP questions [6].
• Apps: iOS and Android with offline mode, browser version, Chrome extension [7].
• AI: since 10 November 2025 AMBOSS offers US members an "AI Mode" for clinical care whose sources are deliberately limited to the AMBOSS knowledge base, a curated selection of US guidelines and a drug database [4]. A German "AI Mode Lernen" is announced with a waiting list [8].
• Pricing: subscription. In the US, student plans start at $19.99/month and clinician plans at $29.99/month, with a 5-day free trial; clinician plans include CME credits [5].

Strengths: expert-edited, structured content; very extensive exam preparation; offline apps; CME.

Medelix at a glance

We describe Medelix only with what our public documents state:

• What it does: answers clinical questions in your language. Every statement carries an [n] citation that opens the original source; when the literature does not support a confident answer, Medelix says so.
• Sources: guidelines, official medicines registers and peer-reviewed literature, retrieved live — among others via Europe PMC, OpenAlex, CORE, Semantic Scholar, Unpaywall and the guideline registers of the issuing bodies [9].
• Data processing: Medelix runs on its own servers in Helsinki, Finland [9].
• Price: free for individual users [10].
• Regulatory: an information tool, not a medical device [10].
• Also: clinical calculators with their primary source.

What Medelix does not have: no question bank, no study plans, no CME credits, no offline app. Answers are AI-generated and not reviewed by an editor beforehand — which is why every statement links to a source you should check yourself.
