Oxybutynin is an anticholinergic (antimuscarinic) agent. Per the US label, it relieves symptoms of bladder instability in uninhibited neurogenic or reflex neurogenic bladder.
What it is used for
- Relief of bladder instability symptoms in neurogenic or reflex neurogenic bladder: urgency, frequency, urinary leakage, urge incontinence, dysuria
Dosing
- Adults: usually one 5-mg tablet two to three times a day; maximum one 5-mg tablet four times a day
- Frail elderly: lower starting dose of 2.5 mg two or three times a day
- Children over 5 years: one 5-mg tablet two times a day; maximum three times a day
Contraindications
- Urinary retention, gastric retention and other severe decreased gastrointestinal motility conditions
- Uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma, and patients at risk for these conditions
- Hypersensitivity to the drug substance or other components
Important warnings
- Angioedema of face, lips, tongue or larynx, sometimes after the first dose; discontinue promptly if the airway is involved
- Most common adverse events are the expected anticholinergic effects

- Blurred vision (9.6%), urinary hesitation (8.5%), headache (7.5%)
