Fluticasone furoate is an intranasal corticosteroid (Avamys nasal spray). It is used to treat the symptoms of allergic rhinitis in adults and children 6 years and over.
What it is used for
- Symptoms of allergic rhinitis in adults, adolescents and children (6 years and over)
Dosing
- Adults and adolescents 12 years and over: two sprays in each nostril once daily (110 micrograms/day); for maintenance one spray per nostril (55 micrograms/day) may be effective
- Children 6 to 11 years: one spray in each nostril once daily (55 micrograms/day); two sprays per nostril if response is inadequate
- Titrate to the lowest effective dose; regular use needed for full benefit, duration limited to the period of allergen exposure
- No dose adjustment in the elderly or in renal or hepatic impairment
- Safety and efficacy under 6 years not established
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or any excipient
Important warnings
- Systemic corticosteroid effects may occur, particularly at high doses for prolonged periods (e.g. adrenal suppression, growth retardation in children, cataract, glaucoma)
- More rarely psychological or behavioural effects, particularly in children
- Consider the total systemic corticosteroid burden when other corticosteroids are used
Side effects
- Most common: epistaxis, nasal ulceration and headache
- Rare: hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis, angioedema, rash and urticaria
- Frequency not known: taste and smell disturbances
Interactions
- Metabolised by CYP3A4; coadministration with ritonavir is not recommended (increased systemic exposure)
