Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic; the 0.12% oral rinse is used to treat gingivitis as part of a professional dental program.

What it is used for

  • Treatment of gingivitis (redness, swelling, bleeding on probing) between dental visits as part of a professional program
  • Not tested in acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis

Dosing

  • Started directly after a dental prophylaxis
  • Rinse twice daily for 30 seconds, morning and evening after toothbrushing
  • Usual dosage: 15 mL of undiluted rinse
  • No rinsing with water, toothbrushing or eating immediately after; expectorated, not swallowed
  • Reevaluation and prophylaxis at intervals no longer than six months

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to chlorhexidine gluconate or other formula ingredients

Important warnings

  • Anaphylaxis and serious allergic reactions reported in postmarketing use
  • Increase in supragingival calculus; removal by dental prophylaxis
