Key facts
Bromfenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) for use in the eye. It is used in adults to treat inflammation after cataract surgery.
What it is used for
- Treatment of postoperative ocular inflammation following cataract extraction in adults.
Dosing
- Yellox (eye drops): one drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily, beginning the day after cataract surgery and continuing through the first 2 weeks of the postoperative period.
- Treatment should not exceed 2 weeks, as safety data beyond this are not available.
- Applies to adults including the elderly; not studied in hepatic disease or renal impairment.
- If more than one eye medicine is used, administer each at least 5 minutes apart.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to bromfenac, to any of the excipients, or to other NSAIDs.
- Patients in whom attacks of asthma, urticaria or acute rhinitis are precipitated by acetylsalicylic acid or other prostaglandin synthetase inhibitors.
Important warnings
- Topical NSAIDs may slow or delay healing; concomitant topical steroids may increase the potential for healing problems.
- In susceptible patients, epithelial breakdown, corneal thinning, erosion, ulceration or perforation can occur and may be sight threatening; discontinue immediately if epithelial breakdown occurs.
- Higher risk of corneal reactions with complicated or repeat ocular surgery, diabetes mellitus, dry eye syndrome or rheumatoid arthritis, among others.
- Possible increased bleeding of ocular tissues; caution with bleeding tendencies or medicines that prolong bleeding time.
- May mask an acute ocular infection. Contains benzalkonium chloride; contact lenses should not be worn during treatment.
Side effects
- Overall, 3.4% of patients experienced one or more adverse reactions.
- Most common or important: abnormal sensation in eye (0.5%), mild or moderate corneal erosion (0.4%), eye pruritus (0.4%), eye pain (0.3%) and eye redness (0.3%).
- Uncommon: visual acuity reduced, corneal oedema, vision blurred, eyelid bleeding, haemorrhagic retinopathy.
Interactions
- No interaction studies have been performed; no interactions with antibiotic eye drops used in conjunction with surgery have been reported.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- During the first and second trimester use only if clearly necessary; not recommended during the last trimester.
- Can be used during breast-feeding.
