SIRS criteria

Intensive care and infectious diseases

Also known as: SIRS-Kriterien · SIRS kriterleri · SIRS criteria (systemic inflammatory response syndrome)

What it is for

The systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is present when at least TWO of the four criteria are met (ACCP/SCCM consensus, 1991/1992).

Classification

CategoryDescription
Temperature>38 °C or <36 °C
Heart rate>90/min
Respirationrespiratory rate >20/min or arterial carbon dioxide (PaCO2) <32 mmHg (4.3 kPa)
White blood cells>12,000/µL or <4,000/µL, or >10% immature (band) forms
Statusthe older sepsis definitions (Sepsis-1 and -2) used SIRS plus infection; the Sepsis-3 task force (2016) found SIRS unhelpful for defining sepsis, which is now defined by organ dysfunction (SOFA).
