Hinchey classification
Surgery and anaesthesia
Also known as: modified Hinchey classification · Hinchey-Klassifikation · modifizierte Hinchey-Klassifikation · Hinchey sınıflaması · Hinchey classification (modified) of complicated diverticulitis
What it is for
The Hinchey classification grades acute (complicated) colonic diverticulitis by the extent of inflammation, abscess and peritonitis; the modified version adds stage 0 and splits stage I so that CT findings fit. Modified stages:
Classification
| Category | Description |
|---|---|
| Stage 0 | mild clinical (uncomplicated) diverticulitis. |
| Stage Ia | confined pericolic inflammation or phlegmon, no abscess. |
| Stage Ib | pericolic or mesocolic abscess. |
| Stage II | pelvic, distant intra-abdominal or retroperitoneal abscess. |
| Stage III | generalised purulent peritonitis. |
| Stage IV | generalised faecal (feculent) peritonitis. |
| Original 1978 | I pericolic abscess, II distant (pelvic) abscess, III purulent peritonitis, IV faecal peritonitis. |
