What it is for
Six diagnostic categories for thyroid fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology (a different system from the cervical Bethesda system).
Classification
| Category | Description |
|---|---|
| I – Nondiagnostic | insufficient or obscured material (the term "unsatisfactory" is no longer used). |
| II – Benign | e.g. follicular nodular disease, chronic lymphocytic (Hashimoto) thyroiditis. |
| III – Atypia of undetermined significance (AUS) | atypia insufficient in amount or degree for a higher category; the former term follicular lesion of undetermined significance (FLUS) is dropped, and AUS is subclassified as AUS-nuclear atypia or AUS-other. |
| IV – Follicular neoplasm (FN) | follicular-patterned lesion that may be a follicular adenoma or carcinoma (or follicular variant papillary carcinoma); includes the oncocytic follicular neoplasm subtype; the former name "suspicious for a follicular neoplasm" is no longer used. |
| V – Suspicious for malignancy | features suggestive of malignancy (most often papillary carcinoma) but not sufficient for a definite diagnosis. |
| VI – Malignant | cytological features diagnostic of malignancy. |
