Uses the AMA table factor, which treats triglyceride as triolein (≈ 885 g/mol). Do not use the cholesterol factor for triglycerides.

What is the Triglycerides mmol/L → mg/dL?

Triglycerides are converted with a different factor from cholesterol because the reference molecule (triolein, about 885 g/mol) is much heavier. The AMA Manual of Style SI table gives 0.0113 mmol/L per mg/dL, so dividing by 0.0113 multiplies by about 88.5.

When to use it

  • Comparing triglyceride results with thresholds given in mg/dL
  • Checking whether the Friedewald LDL formula is applicable (it requires triglycerides in the right unit)
  • Assessing pancreatitis risk in severe hypertriglyceridaemia

When not to use it

  • Cholesterol fractions
  • Non-fasting samples when a fasting threshold is being applied

How it is calculated

Triglycerides (mg/dL) = triglycerides (mmol/L) ÷ 0.0113 (≈ × 88.5)

Clinical pearls and limitations

  • Uses the AMA table factor, which treats triglyceride as triolein (≈ 885 g/mol). Do not use the cholesterol factor for triglycerides.
  • 1.7 mmol/L ≈ 150 mg/dL; 5.6 mmol/L ≈ 500 mg/dL; 10 mmol/L ≈ 885 mg/dL.
  • Quick check: mmol/L × 88.5 ≈ mg/dL.
  • Using the cholesterol factor by mistake understates triglycerides more than twofold.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert triglycerides from mmol/L to mg/dL?

Divide by 0.0113 (≈ multiply by 88.5). Example: 2.0 mmol/L ≈ 177 mg/dL.

Why is the triglyceride factor different from cholesterol?

The factor depends on molar mass; a triglyceride molecule weighs more than twice as much as cholesterol.

What is 150 mg/dL triglycerides in mmol/L?

About 1.7 mmol/L.
